Non-Union
Henna Matharu (she/her) is an emerging South Asian musical theatre performer driven by a deep love of music and storytelling through song. Through dedication and perseverance, Henna is carving out a space for herself in the professional theatre industry, most recently portraying the role of Dorothy Gale in Neptune Theatre’s holiday production of The Wizard of Oz in Halifax, NS. While she has explored different interests including a potential career in film production or even studies in the medical sciences, Henna has always been drawn back to the stage. As a South Asian woman with a love for musical theatre, she is passionate about portraying characters that will allow South Asian audiences see themselves reflected in theatre today.
Henna’s connection to performance began early through junior school productions and community theatre, eventually leading her to teach at musical theatre camps throughout Nova Scotia, including with Neptune Theatre. In 2021, she completed the Neptune Theatre Preparatory Program, where she received extensive training in the foundations of musical theatre including acting through song, monologue work, and contemporary, jazz, and musical theatre dance. At Mount Allison University, Henna continued to develop as an artist, performing in roles such as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Rusty in Footloose, and Sharpay Evans in Disney’s High School Musical.
After graduating in May 2025, Henna launched herself into the professional theatre scene as the Sophie cover in Neptune Theatre’s production of Mamma Mia!, directed by Jeremy Webb, and subsequently landed her professional leading debut as Dorothy, directed by Michelle Langille. Since then, she has continued to build momentum through local opportunities such as Broadway Brunch cabarets in Halifax and has secured work across Canada. A well-rounded performer, Henna brings discipline, curiosity, and versatility to each role and actively seeks projects that showcase and challenge her vocal abilities.
Coming from a non-performance family, Henna has forged her own path into the professional theatre industry. Now fully committed to pursuing her true passion, she approaches her career with gratitude, joy, and an eagerness to grow. She continues to train through dance and vocal classes and remains creatively engaged in film editing, using skills gained to cut, splice, and sound & colour correct different forms of media. Grounded in the belief of divine timing, Henna enters the industry with clarity and confidence, bringing a fresh perspective, strong work ethic, and a powerful commitment to growth to drive her throughout her career.
